Recently, USB-IF officially announced the launch of a new USB-IF compliance with IEC 62680 (USB) specification plan, aiming to provide a convenient path for OEM/ODM to meet the requirements of the EU's upcoming unified charger directive. I. Background and requirements
With the EU's approval of the Unified Charger Directive in 2022, it will come into effect for portable battery-powered devices on January 1, 2025, and will be extended to notebook computers in 2026.
As a support organization for USB technology, USB-IF actively responded to this policy change and launched a test plan that complies with the IEC 62680 (USB) specification to help OEMs/ODMs ensure that their products comply with the EU's Unified Charger Directive.
II. Advantages and processes
Through USB-IF’s compliance testing program, OEMs/ODMs can submit their USB Type-C products to USB-IF authorized independent test laboratories (ITL) for formal testing. Once the testing is successfully completed, the OEM/ODM will receive relevant documentation proving that their product complies with the IEC 62680 (USB) specification to meet EU regulatory requirements.
lll. Comprehensive certification and consumer trust
It is worth noting that while the USB-IF compliance test program provides OEMs/ODMs with a formal way to quickly test their products, it is not equivalent to comprehensive USB-IF compliance testing.
USB-IF compliance testing provides more in-depth testing, not only confirming that the product complies with the IEC 62680 specification, but also fully verifying the product's USB-IF specification compliance in terms of data performance, reliability and interoperability. Products that have passed comprehensive certification are also eligible to use the Certified USB Logo, which is trusted by consumers.
