With the rapid development of technology, we have put forward higher requirements for the connection methods of electronic devices. The USB Type-C interface has become a new standard for connecting modern electronic devices with its excellent performance and convenience. Recently, USB-IF officially launched the USB Type-C Spec R2.4 standard. This article will give you an in-depth understanding of the standard.
1. What is the USB Type-C Spec R2.4 standard?
The USB Type-C Spec R2.4 standard is an updated version launched by the USB-IF organization in 2024. It has made a series of optimizations and expansions to the USB Type-C interface specification.
2. Main updates to the USB Type-C Spec R2.4 standard
1)Power-Only Receptacle(14Pin)
The USB Type-C Spec R2.4 standard introduces certification requirements for sockets that only support charging. This is a simplified version of the USB full-featured Type-C socket. The interface size should comply with the requirements in the figure below in the standard.
The specific requirements are as follows:
a. Must contain 14 contacts such as CC, D+/D-, VBUS and GND (i.e. A1, A4, A5, A6, A7, A9, A12, B1, B4, B5, B6, B7, B9 and B12);
b.The physical presence of SBU contacts (i.e. A8 and B8) is optional;
c.TX and RX (i.e. A2, A3, A10, A11, B2, B3, B10 and B11) contacts are not allowed to exist;
d.D+ and D- contacts (i.e. A6, A7, B6 and B7) should be shorted inside the socket and not connected to the circuit board;
e. The previously emphasized electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) regulations are optional for sockets that only support charging (for example, grounding points or EMC gaskets on the housing);
f. The design of the socket that only supports charging should comply with the maximum power requirements specified by USB PD and USB 2.0;
g. This socket can be used for power or powered devices, but when used for powered devices, it does not support the implementation of USB BC 1.2.
2) Added Right-Angle Plug certification requirements
The USB Type-C Spec R2.4 standard includes Right-Angle Plug (right-angle plug) into the scope of certification for the first time. Previously, customers had many questions about the certification of right-angle plugs, and ambiguities in testing often caused controversy. This standard update provides comprehensive clarification on such issues, ensuring the accuracy and fairness of testing and providing clear guidance and support to customers.
3)Contact Current Rating (contact rated current) test method optimization
In the USB Type-C Spec R2.4 standard, the test method for the rated current of the contacts has also been optimized. Specifically, the rated current applied to the VCONN (B5) contact is modified from at least 1.25A to at least 0.5A, and the remaining requirements remain unchanged. This adjustment will ensure that the testing process is more in line with users' actual application scenarios.
4)Insertion loss (IL) test upgrade of USB4 Gen3&Gen4 cable assembly
The USB Type-C Spec R2.4 standard adds a 12.8GHz test frequency point to the insertion loss test of USB4 Gen3&Gen4 cable assemblies.
3. Standard suitable products
Product types suitable for the USB Type-C Spec R2.4 standard include but are not limited to handheld mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones and headsets, handheld game consoles, portable speakers, e-book readers, etc.
We will continue to pay attention to the latest developments of the USB Type-C Spec R2.4 standard. Our customers and friends can promptly carry out product upgrades and certification processes according to your specific needs. Zhongle Certification looks forward to working with you side by side to jointly promote the progress and innovation of USB connection technology!
